Wild Health: Why the Old Rules Still Work
Some Sundays, I like to lay it all out—no hype, no filters, just some honest talk over coffee. Today, I’m thinking about something that’s been humming in the back of my mind for a while: why were our ancestors so much healthier, and what can we actually do about it?
Let’s take it back—way back. Before the gadgets, before the hacks, before the endless aisles of supplements and powders. Picture it: a world where health wasn’t something to chase, it was something you just lived.
Our ancestors—hunters, gatherers, storytellers around the fire—didn’t have to “optimize” their lives. They were strong, clear-headed, and more at ease in their own skin, not because they found the perfect protocol, but because the world itself shaped them. The wisdom was lived, not downloaded.
Here’s what they did (and what we’ve mostly forgotten):
🌱 Eat What Grows, Runs, or Flies
No boxes, no wrappers, no mystery ingredients. Just plants, animals, herbs, and nuts—real food for real people. No grains, no dairy, no Frankenstein meals. Their guts knew the way home.
🚶♂️ Move Like Water, Rest Like Stone
Most movement was slow—walking, gathering, building. Sometimes, they sprinted—chased or were chased, sparking hormones, burning fat, making bones sing. A few times a week, they lifted heavy things. Muscles grew, minds cleared, and then came rest. The cycle of stress and repair is as old as the hills.
🌞 Wake With the Sun, Sleep With the Moon
Up with the dawn, down with the dusk. No fighting the dark, no arguing with the light. Their bodies ticked in time with the sky.
😌 Work Hard, Relax Harder
Even in the thick of the hunt or harvest, they knew how to rest—honoring the natural tides of energy, pushing when the fire was burning, resting when it burned low. Not laziness, but wisdom.
😂 Play, Laugh, Let Go
Life wasn’t just struggle. There was play, laughter, and the kind of rest that comes from being at ease in your own skin. Stress came and went, but it didn’t stick.
📵 Resist the Siren Song of Distraction
No endless blinking lights or buzzes to pull them away. They lived in the present, with purpose. The world was wide, their focus was narrow—one thing at a time, done well.
🌿 Live in the Body, Not Just the Mind
When there was nothing to do, there was really nothing to do. Idleness wasn’t a sin; it was a way to let the body mend and the spirit breathe.
And here’s the kicker—did you notice? Not once did I mention taking a supplement, or chasing the latest exercise craze, or tracking your sleep with a gadget. Nothing about hacks, powders, or potions. It was simple, and it worked, because the world itself was enough.
Now, don’t get me wrong: we’ve drifted a long way from that wild wisdom. Sometimes we need a nudge—a supplement protocol, a bit of testing—to help us see what’s missing or get pointed in the right direction. But let’s be real: that stuff alone isn’t going to make you better. It’s not the magic bullet. Think of it as a compass or a map—it helps you set your course straight, clears the fog just enough for you to find the old trail again. But the real healing? That begins when you start living in sync with nature, and with yourself.
Maybe we can’t live exactly as they did, but we can take a cue from their playbook. Use what we need, learn what we can, and never forget: the truest health starts with nature, and within self—not in spite of them.
Thanks for spending Sunday with me. What old rules are you bringing back? How are you carving out your own new path? Let’s keep the conversation wild—and real.
