I never expected pain to be my greatest teacher. But at 54, looking back at two major "pain portals" in my life, I realize these challenges weren't just obstacles to overcome – they were doorways to transformation.
The first portal was physical. The kind of pain that disrupts your daily life, that makes simple movements a challenge, and eventually led me to surgery. The second was harder to see but equally devastating – the kind that keeps you awake at night, tossing and turning with worry, fear, and anxiety. Sometimes, it pulled me into the depths of depression.
What I discovered through my own healing journey is that I wasn't alone. As a functional medicine practitioner now, I see these same patterns in my clients every day. They come to me exhausted, carrying extra weight that won't budge, and fighting battles with chronic pain. Many are successful in their careers but struggling silently with overwhelm and despair.
Here's what most don't realize: as men, we're conditioned to push through pain. "Tough it out." "Man up." We bury our feelings deep and find ways to numb ourselves – maybe it's mindlessly watching TV for hours, drowning in work, or using food, alcohol, or other substances to cope. I know because I've been there.
But here's the truth I've learned: anything can be your medicine, and anything can be your poison. It's all about your relationship with it.
This understanding led me to develop my 7 Peaks of Transformative coaching approach. Through functional medicine, we don't just mask symptoms – we address the root causes of your physical and emotional challenges. My goal isn't just to help you feel less drained or sore; it's to strengthen you for the journey ahead and reduce your risk factors for disease in ways that big pharma often overlooks.
Pain might be the portal to transformation, but you don't have to walk through it alone. Sometimes, the bravest thing we can do is admit we need a different approach – one that sees us as whole beings, not just a collection of symptoms to suppress.
Your pain, whether physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual, isn't just something to endure. It might be pointing you toward a deeper healing journey. And if you're ready to take that first step, I'm here to guide you through each peak of transformation, using the powerful tools of functional medicine to help you reclaim your vitality and purpose.
Because the journey to healing isn't just about eliminating pain – it's about transforming it into your greatest teacher and guide toward lasting health.
Rick Rubin has said, "The Better You Feel, The Better Things Go" and this is spot on. When we start feeling better, things start going better, not just with our health, but with our relationships, personal and professional endeavors and more.
